One person's defence is another person's offence - giving people firearms just increases the prospect it will end in the death of either or both protagonists.

Ts677 - while I can see the logic of allowing country people access to firearms in a highly regulated and controlled way for the purpose of shooting problem wildlife (such as to cull plagues of rabbits or kangaroos in Australia) in a humane way to protect lifestock, I think you are missing the point of my argument, which is that the US is too tolerant of firearms and should have much stricter controls over firearms to reduce the ridiculously high deathtoll from firearms in the US. Firearms should not be glorified and apart form exceptional cases should not be in homes. That is you should need to have very good reasons for having a firearm in your house and 'self-defence' or protection from burglars should not qualify as an adequate security system is a better way to achieve this objective. One thing about living in London is that you apologise all the time "Sorry, sorry, sorry..." but mostly don't mean it. I remember the film "A fish Called Wanda" in which the Kevin Kline character yells at the John Cleese character something like "will you British just stop apologising!" I must say I feel like that sometimes but have found that I have also become a knee-jerk (but insincere) apologiser.

just had a thought - the rationalisation for firearm prevalence in the US is that the 10,000s of deaths from shootings every year in the US is acceptable to protect the freedom to bear arms and for people to protect themselves (which supposedly reduces burglaries - though I think insurance companies during household insurance if you ahve a good quality alarm is a better way to address this issue). So most people on JWN would agree that the blood doctrine needlessly results in thousands of unnecessary deaths every year. Why is the pro-gun ideology in teh US any different? The reason why the high number of gun deaths in the US is not a bigger issue is because the victims are generally young black men - a marginalised section of society who the majority of the population don't care about.

by Ugottabefresh in...when i told them i didn't believe anymore.
they cried like i'd never seen before.
my oldest, 10, pleaded with me that she'd do anything to get me to keep going to meetings ("i'll get a's on my report card!").

The cult's use of JW parents to indoctrinate the kids is despicable and hence the confusion and dislocation when one parent learns TTATT - at least you can now be a postiive influence in their lives and give them alternatives to the WBTS BS. A lot will depend on whether you can get your wife to see TTATT. Good luck

Comatose - I am a bit worried about the love bombing - she came straight home after the meeting but she seemed pretty happy and then she was saying 'my friend told me ...' with no appreciation of the conditional love so it seems she was love-bombed and she is off to the memorial on Monday. I wonder whether I should gently suggest to her that they were nice to her because she hadn't been for a while and that if she becomes regular again she will be back to being a second class citizen so it is better to go infrequently. I will see what happens and whether she starts attending more regularly again. Hopefully she has enough sense to realise that is what is going on but I think she is so desperate for their acceptance that she may be encouraged by her reception on Sunday. I will have to up my love-bombing and arranging of other events on Sundays. It is such a roller coaster of uncertainty not knowing what is going on in her head. Fraz

didgeridoo - nice poster - says it all really.
designs - the phallic appeal of a gun to a male is undeniable.
There is also the romanticization of the Wild West feeding into the attraction of guns. Modern urban middle-aged overweight US males like to see themselves as modern day cowboys.
The rationalisations for the prevalence of guns in the US is the result of cognitive dissonance. Even regular mass shootings in US schools doesn't seem to shift the confirmation bias. If dead kids can't do it, then nothing can. And the suggestion that crime is lower in the US - it isn't - because of the prevalence of guns, is simply not true and is probably spread by the NRA, which is about as reliable in the information it provides as the GB of the WBTS. And the reason why law enforcement in the US kills so many unarmed civillians is because they are constantly on guard for civillians carrying weapons and so frequently react too quickly. Law enforcement in countries that don't have a prevalence of guns, don't kill unarmed civillians.

Is this new donation arrangement for real?
by nugget injust read a post on jwsurvey about the new donation arrangement.
congregations are to pledge a monthly amount to be sent to the society to fund the building of assembly halls and kingdom halls.
congregations who already have a loan from the society will no longer have to pay back the loan but the amount pledged should not be less than the current monthly repayments to the society.

They ar edong two things: (1) centralizing control of the money; and (2) increasing the pressure on the elders to guilt the r&f into contributing more. I think The Searchers suggestion about using monthly recurring payment facilities is a very strong likelihood.

First post after a year or two of lurking on this site-Sorry for the length!
by Pattytheperfect1 innot sure of the point of telling my story, but just got off the phone with my grandma and i am so angry, stressed and i don't know what else...i guess i just wanted to hear from someone other than my husband that i'm not crazy for my reaction to family interaction.. my condensed story gramatical errors and all :).
father was a born in jw, mother was a convert.
i was born the last of 3 siblings and shortly after my birth in 1981 my parents divorced.

Pattythe perfect1 - I am so glad you have a found yourself a good worldy husband and you seem like you have your life together notwithstanding the terrible way in which you were treated by your JW family. The damage this cult has done to people's lives and families is awful. The price your uncle paid for the crime he committed against you was pathetic. He should consider himself lucky not to be locked up. As for your father, well the only thing in his favour was that he was the victim of a cult and so wasn't in his right mind - you are right to be very angry with both men and not to ever have to deal with them again. As for the scum bag lawyer who prevented your mother from getting custody on both occasions - I hope there is a hell and he rots there for eternity. Fraz

hmmm....not convinced it is really related to freedom - since 9/11 US citizens accept a lot of limits on and infringements of personal freedom. Contrary to the ideology, the US is one of the most regulated societies on the planet.
